Our Journey Through the Heart of Suriname

When Nature Touches the Soul, It Changes Everything

The moment we stepped off the plane, we were embraced by the warm, humid air and the sincere kindness of the people. It felt less like arriving in a new place and more like being welcomed home by something ancient and alive.

Our journey began in Paramaribo, the vibrant capital of Suriname.

A city where colonial charm meets tropical rhythm, where colors, spices, and stories blend in every corner. But soon we left the city behind and ventured deeper—toward the roots of something far greater.

Our first destination: the community of Brownsweg, nestled near the once-pristine Brownsberg Nature Park. There, we were met with open arms and honest voices. The people welcomed us not just into their homes, but into their memories—some painful, some proud. They spoke of Brownsberg's decline, caused by unsustainable practices such as illegal gold mining, which had scarred the land and threatened biodiversity. It was a sobering reminder of how delicate the balance between man and nature truly is.

From Brownsberg, we continued further inland.

What the Amazon Gave Us: Perspective, Purpose, and Peace

To reach the heart of the Amazonian forest, we boarded a narrow wooden boat, its small engine surprisingly powerful. The skill of our boatman—navigating winding rivers, avoiding submerged branches, reading the water like a second language—was nothing short of remarkable.

The boat ride lasted several hours. Along the way, we passed remote river villages, witnessing life in its rawest and most beautiful form. Children waved from the riverbanks, women washed clothes by hand, and men fished quietly in long canoes. All around us, the forest whispered—birdsong, rustling leaves, distant howls. The sounds of nature here are immense, and humbling.

The next day, we visited the villages we had passed. What we found was breathtaking: trees everywhere, heavy with nuts—each one holding the promise of regeneration. The locals explained that the nuts were only ready when they fell naturally from the tree. Once gathered, they were dried, cracked, and pressed into oil by hand.

These trees are not rushed. Some take years before yielding their first fruit. This patient rhythm revealed a deeper truth: nature flourishes when respected. The communities care for their forests like family, knowing that their future—our shared future—depends on its health and abundance.

What we witnessed was more than beauty. It was resilience. It was wisdom passed through generations. It was a belief that by working with the land, not against it, we can nourish both people and planet.

This journey through Suriname changed us. It deepened our purpose. It reminded us that true beauty is not only what you put on your skin—it’s the story behind every drop, and the hands that make it possible.

And it all began with a friend—John, the founder of BioTara, whose vision to uplift communities and protect the forest inspired us to believe. We didn’t just follow his path; we became part of it.

More Than a Journey —

 A Return to What Matters

This journey into the heart of Suriname did more than open our eyes—it opened something within us.

To walk among ancient trees, to be welcomed by communities whose lives are deeply intertwined with the rhythm of the forest, to witness the quiet strength of nature and the quiet dignity of its stewards—these moments etched themselves into our souls.

For both my husband and me, this was not just a trip. It was a turning point. A reminder of what truly matters: connection, intention, respect for the Earth and for one another.

We arrived as visitors, curious and inspired. We returned changed—grounded, humbled, and deeply enriched. The forest taught us patience. The people showed us resilience. And the journey reminded us that beauty, at its most profound, begins with care.

This experience lives in everything we do now. In our choices. In our values. In XIVA.

Because when nature touches your spirit, it stays with you forever.
